All about home improvement information

  • What with the internet growing at an alarming rate and the mass of information which is available over it, sometimes finding the correct home improvement website which has the information you are looking for can be a very daunting task.

Inevitably one enters a search and you are confronted with everything from social networks to free competition sites when you where actually trying to find information about building a wall. Now this may get very frustrating, but there are effective ways to achieve the search results which you are looking for if only you understand how to search.

The home improvement side of the internet is huge enough on its own, but then you will get very clever people who insert search tags into their site which will take you to places on the internet which have absolutely nothing to do with the search which you first entered, this makes it even more difficult to get the information you are looking for.

To effectively find the information you are looking for from a home improvement website is to attempt to break the search down into its smallest components. Say now you where trying to get information on building a wall from a home improvement website, the best place to start would be to enter something such as building a wall.

Now you will see what I mean about been flooded by irrelevant websites in the results, but now you are able to search within these results for more specialised fields. This is where the trick comes in, try to break your search down to the most basic component of what it is which you wish to know.

For instance, say you are building a wall but are not sure of the cement mixture ratios which you should be using, then you simply search within those results (a function provided by most search engines) for the keywords ‘recomended cement mixture’.

You will be amazed at how this will narrow down the results, but be sure to search within the results which you have already and that you do not start a whole new search.

If you follow this simple technique, it is sure to guide you to the correct home improvement website which will be able to answer your question.

  • I’m going to walk you through one of the most interesting summer time ideas I’ve ever seen. A patio fireplace idea, but in the most savvy way.

My former secretary who has moved on to own her own home improvement business often calls me for specific projects. We work together from time to time and we have a blast. But this one, she had to tell me about because she did it all her own.

    Items You Will Need

A Patio Bricks One Ventless Fireplace Insert

Of course, with the bricks you’ll need mortar. But, that’s really all there is to this list. Now, put on your business suit and get ready to do some negotiation.

    First, The Patio

It’s quite obvious that the first thing you need is a patio. It’s a patio project. But, you can actually start a patio with this idea. If you have flat yard extending from the back door or if you can make it flat with no great amount of effort, all you need are a few extra bricks when you are ready to get them.

Placing the bricks in any arrangement is actually fine. But, I prefer an angled approach because it’s easier to square. You simple cut corners out of your bricks and place them in the jagged edges of your patio perimeter. If you can’t cut the bricks, don’t worry. The jagged edges will look natural.

    Second, The Bricks

This is the part I love best because anyone can simply go to a lumber yard or a home improvement store and buy bricks. But, it takes a savvy business person to get paid to haul bricks away.

I have been in construction for years. And I have always offered my services to clients that I will haul their excess bricks away. I’ve only had to deal with a few clients who wanted them sent back and a discount on the service. Most homeowners are happy with my work, have already written the check and are more than happy to let me haul their bricks out of sight out of mind.

But, my former secretary tried a new thing this last time. She drove through a home development community where there are houses in all different stages of completion. She found homes where the brick was finished and stacks of bricks sat in the driveway. Instead of offering to haul the bricks away for free, she contacted the homeowners and told them she would give them a great deal on their hauling expenses. When the homeowners agreed, she told me she couldn’t believe it. Not only was she getting what she needed for free, but she was getting paid to take it. Now, I couldn’t do that. But, hats off to her for having the gumption to attempt such a thing.

Finally, The Ventless Gel Fireplace Insert

Just off the patio, you want to build yourself a brick casing. Build a solid foundation that is about three feet high. Then build four columns that rise about another four feet. Then, build a nice roof on your patio fireplace. If you pay attention to what you are doing, you can do this by yourself.

Use string to keep your bricks in line. Use your trowels to scrape excessive mortar off the bricks after you stack them. If you take your time, you can look like a professional.

In the opening that you’ve created with your four columns is where you will put your ventless gel fireplace insert. Of course, you can stack real wood in the fireplace and light it. But, you’ll have fire control to deal with and it’s a heck of a mess when you are finished. Light some Sunjel gel fuel and place it in the insert for just as much fire and heat.

A patio fireplace for less then $300? No, wait a minute. For free. Because with the money she was paid to haul the bricks away, my former secretary was able to purchase a ventless gel fireplace insert no problem at all. Now, that’s a home improvement project with the maximum business savvy.

  • Anyone thinking of doing some home makeovers should go for the Home Improvement grants that are given freely for people who wish to modernize their homes. It is also given to investors who want to put money into home restoration projects in the community. The baseline is that all the projects whether individually or corporately, should add towards ascertaining that the houses are safe for people to use and at the same time it contributes to the general upgrading of the whole community. Now, making use of these grants can surely help you to make your home beautiful without you facing hefty costs.

It must be noted however, that these grants come with certain requirements for one to qualify for them. It means that it is not just enough that you think you need to upgrade the state of your property; for you to be automatically given the grant.

The first thing is to see whether there is such funding available in your locality; which can be used to sustain such grants.

How you can go about checking whether such facilities are available in your own area is easy. You simply go online to check the grant directory which will show you whether there are home improvement grants and which programs are currently being covered in your area that you can apply for.

You will also be able to find out more about the sums of money available as claims, how it is to be spent, and what you need to qualify for the same. It is all there laid out for you in the directory.

Most of these monies are obtained from the local as well as state government agencies but sometimes there are private organizations that do it too; and they have tax benefits. You shouldn’t rule these bodies out if you’re in the midst of a search for help. There are some great offers that people pass up simply because of the fact that they’re intimidated by the private nature of these organizations.

There are now so many bodies that aid project funding which makes grant funding a lot less involving. No credit checks, down payments or any loan collaterals are needed any more; the only requirement left now is for people to prove that they have reached the age of 18 years for them to apply for the grants.

Now it is possible to get as much as $20,000 for your home improvement project immediately your request goes through. So go on, get to the most up-to-date directory and check if indeed you qualify.

  • In every media form dealing with home improvement tips, one inevitably recognizes that the guidelines and suggestions that the host, guest, or specialist recommends is not an over-arching law and is not a formula- in these shows, and in home improvement literature, one will notice that in the place of a universal rule, or a universal code of home improvement laws, the hosts and specialists always strive to point out the little things that can be changed with care and attention.

Instead of a unified mission or goal, the homemaker is best served by pursuing a series of small adjustments that will lend to the overall appeal of the house. With this thought in mind, homemakers should consider the condition of their gardens, of their windows, and of the vinyl siding on their house.

Gardens are an important but often overlooked aspect of the overall house. A barren yard that is without flowers, shrubs, or trees can be a sore sight and can lead to a devaluation of the property. Likewise, a yard that is full of vegetation that has not been properly suited to the style of the house and the neighborhood will suffer as well. Needless to say, a Christmas tree in your front yard is not a good choice if your house is Southern California. If you pay attention to your landscape by contacting a professional landscape service your lawn will improve and with it, the quality of your home will improve as a whole.

Vinyl siding is generally taken for granted as being a purely functional aspect of the home. While it is true that vinyl siding provides a vital role in protecting the home from storm damage and age, vinyl siding can also be a serious aesthetic factor. Typically, vinyl siding will figure into the home’s appeal in a negative way, that is, it is only really noticed once it has fallen into disrepair. But this is all the more reason to take care of your vinyl siding and make sure it is clean and in good condition. Consider it a compliment if you can go an extended period of time without anyone mentioning the condition of your vinyl siding.

The old adage suggests that the ‘eyes are the window to the soul’, equally one might say that the ‘windows, are the windows to the house’s soul,’ Many homemakers leave their windows the same for the entire duration that they are present in a house, but this is a missed opportunity. You can express your personality in unique and creative ways by shopping for windows that fit you and your essence.

Taken alone, any one of these guidelines might seem insignificant when weighed up against the totality of the homemaking project. Certainly, a new flowerpot or a new window by itself will not revitalize and change your home completely, but by compiling a series of these small improvements, your house will be greatly improved.

  • Everyone wants their home to look clean and attractive. In certain climates however, this can require a constant stream of effort that would wear anybody out. Many areas of the Washington state area have climates, which are more prone to cause the weathering and corrosion of home exteriors. This article is designed to show you how simple Washington home improvement can be. You don’t have to work around the clock to maintain your home’s siding, paint job, windows or gutter systems—even if you live in Washington.

    Siding in Washington
Washington home improvement, at least exterior Washington home improvement, starts with the right kind of siding. For most homes there are three types of siding that are recommendable.

    Fiber Cement Siding
The first is Fiber Cement siding. Fiber Cement siding is beneficial if you are looking for a low initial cost. It doesn’t rot or burn and it resists insect damage. However, on the down-side, Fiber cement siding does not help to resist extreme temperatures, whether cold or hot. Fiber cement siding is also very heavy, which adds additional weight to the foundation of your home. It is brittle, (which leads to chipping from nails), and is more subject to air gaps and porous defects. Before you purchase this type of siding you should ask yourself how long you plan to keep your home. If you plan to keep your home for a long period of time it is recommendable that you purchase a siding that is more durable.

    Cedar Siding
Another type of siding is Cedar siding. Cedar siding increases the value of your home, beautifies your home with a natural look, increases the resell value of your home and resists heat loss or gain. On the down-side, cedar siding has a high initial cost, has very thin boards, and is becoming more scarce, (which means that the price of cedar siding is continually on the rise.

    Swedish Siding
The last type of siding that we recommend to your consideration is Swedish siding. Swedish siding increases the value of a home and offers a beautiful natural look. In addition, it increases the resell value of a home and resists heat loss or gain. It is thicker than most siding and the trees that are used to make this type of siding are generally 100 yrs old—which makes for more durable siding. Unlike cedar siding, Swedish siding comes in abundant supply and only the select heartwood is used. Finding siding in Washington that will increase the value of your home and which will require less maintenance doesn’t have to be a difficult process if you do your research from the beginning. Washington home improvement does not have to be difficult.

    Painting for Washington Home Improvement
Another aspect of Washington home improvement is the painting service that you choose for the exterior of your home. When looking for a painting service it is recommendable that you contact a Washington paint contractor that will ‘prep’ your home carefully before applying a paint job. A good ‘prep job’ includes water prep (i.e. pressure washing of the gutters, eaves, siding and house trim for the removal of loose dirt and old paint). A dry prep process is also recommended as are scraping, sanding, caulking and filling. For more information in regards to these Washington home improvement processes, please contact a professional Washington paint contractor in your area.

    Windows for Washington Home Improvement
For additional Washington home improvement we also recommend bay area vinyl windows. These windows are gorgeous, they let in lots of light and in many cases they are usually amenable to customization. Finding replacement windows in Washington that really contribute to the aesthetic qualities of your home doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Consult with a bay area window expert if you have questions.

    Gutter Systems Improvement
No one wants gutter leaks, unsightly nail-heads, downspouts or clogged gutters. Make sure you get durable gutters for your home. A less-than-quality gutter can lead to other problems on the exterior of your home so if gutters are the problem at your house, they should be taken care of as quickly as possible, especially if you plan to live in your home for a long period of time.

  • In a time of economic turmoil such as this, it is important to not only hold fast to one’s assets, but learn to maximize them as well so that they grow in value. For most people, their greatest material asset is their home. However, investing in one’s home not only increases its market value and desirability for prospective future buyers. Even if you have no intention of selling your house, beautifying it and making sure it is in tip-top shape will save you buckets of money as well. Don’t believe it? Here’s the low-down on home improvement financing that will make your piggy bank burp in satisfaction.

    Energy efficiency

Perhaps the most expensive improvement you can do for your house is to make it more energy-efficient. Let’s face it. Installing solar panels, new insulation, flushing systems or energy-saving lights can cost a lot, but in the long run it’ll save you more money in utility bills. Also, because more and more people are concerned about the environment, having an energy-efficient home will increase its market value. Besides, there should be no price we shouldn’t be willing to pay when it comes to saving our planet.

    Gift Cards

Another way in which you can finance your home improvements is through using gift cards in purchasing the things you need. So, next time it’s your birthday or wedding anniversary, ask your friends to give you gift certificates from a home depot, Crate and Barrel or Bed, Bath and Beyond. It’s a fantastic way to improve your home without spending a single cent.

    Home Improvement Loans

There are some towns that help in home improvement financing by granting loans to homeowners. Ask around. It pays to be in the know about these things.

  • One of the largest home improvement projects that many home owners will take on is that if redoing their kitchen. Why is it so costly to do this project? There are a number of reasons and they all start with the expense of labor. Hiring someone to come in and handle this project is a large cost factor. Yet, it may be necessary unless you have done this type of work before. In most cases, the cost of labor is well worth the investment, assuming that you know who you are working with and do your homework.

    Should You Hire Someone?

The first thing for you to do is to consider hiring on a contractor to handle your home improvement project. You will want to invest in this process wisely, so, to do that, ask these questions.

o Do you have the skill to design and implement a new kitchen? This will include gas line work, electrical work, plumbing work, as well as carpentry skills.

o Each piece of the puzzle of the kitchen must be fitted together. Will you really be diligent enough to handle all of the small details of this project?

o Being without a kitchen is a huge problem for most homeowners. Will you be able to invest enough time in getting the kitchen complete to make sure this does not become a huge problem for you?

o Do you have the funds to back up any mistakes that you make? A contractor will handle his own mistakes, but if it is your fault, you’ll need to cover it.

In addition, consider the skill level and speed that your kitchen can be done with the right help. If you are doing it in your spare time, it may take a year or more. This is costly to a family without a doubt.

    What To Look For

Yet, even if you do hire someone, not everyone will be a benefit to you. Consider these things:

o What is the experience level that they have?

o Do they have the cost effectiveness that you need and the guarantee?

o What do their past customers have to say about them?

Redoing your kitchen is an investment in your home well worth doing if you do it with the right help. Take the time necessary to make that happen so that you do not regret it later.

  • The Obama 2009 Stimulus Package has several grants some of which are quite unexpected. One of these is home improvement Federal grant. The Federal home improvement grants are available for no down payments and are not biased with your income or the credit scores.

Tips to Qualify for Federal Home Improvement Grants

Here are some tips to qualify for home improvement grants as prescribed by the Federal Government:

? Your work begins with locating your local government office in the area. They shall guide you on the eligibility criteria for the same. These can also be found out in detail on the Federal Government websites.

? Most likely, they would require you to prove that you do not have money to get the home improved. Also they would ask as to what sort of improvements are you looking forward to.

? At times they require you to quote based on some specific company as to what would be the expenses that must be incurred for the required task.

? They do all these inquiries for the key reason that these grants must not be misuses by any of the individuals.

? You may also qualify for a loan for this requirement. All you have to do is search for it on the Internet just like a car or a home loan. There are some companies who do provide special packages for such purposes. The best part is that they come for a lower rate of interest.

? Usually the home owners use this loan to add another room to the houses, change their electric equipments or may be repair the roof and / or windows of the house.

? You must understand that without proper documentation, the Government work can not go ahead. So before approaching the office, make sure that you have all proper documents and proofs on hand. For instance the proofs of monthly income and the monthly expenses. These would make your case very strong and help you proceed faster.

  • Would you like to increase the market value of your home? A few home improvement projects will offer a return when you sell your home, but many home improvement projects will not provide much of a return on your home improvement investment. Pick your home improvement projects wisely and if you do take out a loan to complete your project, do your homework first and be sure that you have a good chance to recover the cost of the project when you decide to sell your home.

Kitchen remodeling is a great way to add value to your home. Upgrading your appliances, replacing door and cabinet handles and painting walls can add new life to your kitchen plus add value to your home. Kitchens sell a home, so remodeling a kitchen should be a first choice for a home improvement project. Sometimes doing it yourself can save money, but consider hiring a professional for the large jobs. The top five kitchen remodeling projects which are recommended by Realtors are painting, cabinet refacing, new counter tops, new floors and a modern cook top range.

A bathroom remodel is second only to kitchen remodeling in terms of getting the most return on your home improvement investment. A bathroom remodel can often mean making the most of your current space, by upgrading fixtures, flooring and lighting. A few inexpensive ways to make your existing bathroom more beautiful and appealing include upgrading your cabinets, counter tops, sinks, tile or your tub and shower. However, if you do decide to add a new bathroom, it is going to increase the value of your home.

Kitchens and bathroom remodeling are both excellent choices when you want to increase the value of your home. Kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects are the best at recouping their cost and adding to the resale value of your house. The average return on a bathroom or kitchen remodel is 100-105%.

Increasing the curb appeal of your home is one of the simplest and inexpensive ways to increase the value of your home. Applying a fresh coat of paint can make the inside of your home appear more appealing to potential buyers, which could mean a quicker sale. Neutral colors are a good choice when you are preparing your house to sell. Neutral colors will blend in good with a variety of other colors and can make a room look more open and appear larger.

Your roof is one of the first impressions people have of a home. With proper maintenance, a high quality roof should last a very long time. A new roof won’t add a lot of value to your home, but it will help prevent the types of repairs that can result from water leaking in from your roof.

If your carpeting or vinyl flooring is beginning to show signs of wear this can adversely affect the appearance of the whole room and detract from the value. So replace the carpeting in rooms where the wear is severe to help increase your homes value. Often, a good carpet cleaning is all that is needed.

Naturally, you can only make the home improvements that your budget will allow. But many of these suggestions that I have discussed are not very expensive . All of them however will enhance the appearance and add value to most homes.

Remember that with any home improvement project moderation is the key. Don’t go overboard. Focus on improving two or three areas in your home which need the most work.

  • For those planning a home improvement project for which keeping the budget modest is a major factor, the question often arises, “Should I be my own general contractor?” Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

First let’s look at what a general contractor is and does.

In a nutshell, a general contractor, or GC, is the person responsible for the overall, successful completion of the project. On a small home improvement project that could mean doing the actual construction work as well as managing the details such as permits and staying on budget.

For a larger project such as a room addition, a major structural remodel or building an entire house, it falls to the GC to hire, manage and pay the sub-contractors (the workers who will be building the moulds, pouring the concrete, doing the framing, etc.) as well as making sure the job gets done on budget, on time and accurately.

If you are thinking of being the general contractor for a large project, having at least an intermediate level of knowledge of the construction process, including pulling permits, local construction codes, contracts and proper insurance is very important.

Also, you need adequate time to supervise the goings on at your site. I don’t know many people with the free time away from a job to successfully manage this type of large undertaking. If you are short on knowledge and/or time, but are still thinking of acting as GC on your major home improvement project, I wish you good luck. This is not to say you can’t do it, but the headaches might not be worth the trade off.

Let’s not forget that the main reason to act as your own GC is potential cost savings. Since professional GCs generally mark up every piece of material and every sub-contractor salary, sometimes by as much as 30% or more, if you can save some of that money by acting as your own GC, by all means do it.

But if you are not familiar with the details of completing your project, those potential cost savings can turn into cost overruns in a hurry. With a smaller home improvement project, however, the stakes are not as high and so the potential benefit is there without the same degree of risk.

But even with a smaller home improvement project, there are qualities a GC should have that are important.

Unless you’ll be doing all of the demolition, sawing, nailing and finishing yourself, as GC, you’ll be hiring, managing and paying the sub-contractors. People skills, knowledge of finances and a healthy dose of common, good sense are necessary.

If you’ve never done a home improvement project similar to the one you will be taking on, a willingness to ask questions – even ones you think are just plain dumb – is vital. Also, having a “can do” problem-solving attitude is recommended. After all, you’ll be the one everyone looks to when a fix, change or solution is needed.

The main argument against being GC on your own job is a big one. If you don’t like the finished job, you have no one to point the finger at (or fix what you are unsatisfied with) but yourself.

The value of a good GC is his or her experience and ability to solve problems. While there will certainly be extra cost involved in your job by hiring a general contractor, in the end the peace of mind might be worth the expense.
