Making the decision to add or change a storm door to your house can drastically change the look of your home. It is important to choose the right storm door that fits with the look of your house. When choosing a storm door, there are 5 main things to consider: Price, Material, Size, Handing, and Style.
Pricing on Storm Doors
First and foremost, you should stick to your budget. Storm doors range in price from around $100-$300 for standard size doors that you can find at Lowe’s or Home Depot to around $300-$500 for custom sized doors ordered from the same retailers. Now be realistic, while you may find a coupon that gives you a good deal, a $100 screen door is not going to perform like a $500 storm door.
Now you may ask, “What makes a $500 storm door better than a $100 storm door?” The answer is the materials and the bells and whistles. Vinyl storm doors are less expensive than extruded aluminum storm doors. While you save money on the price, they will wear out faster because of exposure to the elements. However, you can get a wood-core vinyl door which is more sturdy and provides better insulation for a little bit more money. On a higher-end door you may get a choice of custom colors like cranberry, hunter green, or almond where on the lower end you can only have white or black. With more expensive doors you can usually choose a hardware color ranging from brass or silver to oil-rubbed bronze and antique brass. One important difference is most top end doors come with 2 door closure pistons instead of 1. They are mounted at the top and bottom of the door instead of just having one at the top of the storm door. This gives the door better rigidity and allows you to adjust the speed more. Keep in mind that the cost of a separate piston is only about $5.00, so don’t spend an extra $100 on a door just to get a second door closure.
The best way to get a sense of the price is to either go into a national retailer like Lowe’s or Home Depot and look at the storm doors or search online If you go to a store, be aware that while some associates may have general knowledge, most do not know the first thing about storm doors. I personally try to avoid them because in my experience none of them has ever actually installed a storm. To make matters worse, their training is minimal and they give cookie-cutter answers to all your questions. Personally, I like to shop online to compare prices and narrow down more what I am looking for.
Another thing to consider about pricing is that most storm doors are Energystar compliant, which means that your new door qualifies for an IRS tax credit. The credit can be up to as much as $500 and is claimed on your next years taxes. So keep in mind that you can save money on your taxes by purchasing a higher end door. Materials
All storm doors are made from metal, wood, vinyl/plastic, or some combination thereof. Less expensive doors use vinyl/plastic and may or may not have a wood core for added rigidity and insulation. More expensive doors are made from extruded aluminum (“extruded” means “shaped”)
The benefits of vinyl/plastic doors are that they are less expensive to purchase, are easy to clean, and inexpensive to replace. With vinyl doors, especially Emco’s Forever door, the color is molded throughout the door. This means that a scratch on the door is less visible because it is not a different color underneath. The drawbacks are that these storm doors wear out sooner, look “cheaper”, and have trouble standing up to extreme heat and cold.
The benefits of an extruded aluminum door are that it is heavier, more durable, longer-lasting, and better looking. They look classier and offer much more security. The drawbacks are that they are more expensive, are little harder to clean, require more maintenance, and can become hot to the touch when exposed to heat for a long time.
Sizes of Storm Doors
While you can order a storm door in whatever size you need, standard door widths (measured in inches) are 30″, 32″, and 36″. Standard door heights (measured in inches) range from 80″-81″ and 96″ (for 8′ feet tall doors). Traditionally, your front door opening is 36″ wide by 80″-81″ high. Back doors are traditionally 32″ wide by 80″-81″ high; however newer homes (built after 1990) have been also using 36″ wide by 80″-81″ high doors at times.
Storm Door Handing
One of the most important questions down the road becomes, “Which way will the door open?” If you are dealing ordering from a retailer like Lowe’s or Home Depot, it is imperative that the sales rep be crystal clear on this. In the world of door installations, handing is everything. Now we get to some industry jargon.
First, ALL storm door measurements are assuming that you are standing OUTSIDE of your house looking at the door. Now, handing is stated as either “left-handed” or “right-handed.” This means that if you but your back against the jamb where you want the door do be hinged, whichever hand of yours is on the outside is the “handing” of your door.
For example, let’s say you but your back against the hinge side jamb of your front door and your right hand is facing the outside. Then you want a “right-handed” door.
The good news on handing is that most standard sized doors can be installed either way; you don’t have to purchase a storm door that is pre-handed (unless you have an 8′ tall door).
Now most of the time you want the storm door handles to be on the same side as the entry door handles. However, there are a few cases where this is not true. One such case is if you have a wall close to the opening. It is always preferable to have a storm door open towards a wall that is 12″ or less from an entry door. This is to ensure that your “traffic pattern” is not interrupted. Meaning that people won’t have to open and then walk around the storm door to get into the house. Doing this ensures that the storm door is not in your way when you enter and exit the house.
3 Styles of Storm Doors
Storm doors come in 3 different styles: Full-view, Ventilating, and Roll-screen.
Full-view: A Full-View door is one where you can have ONLY the glass panel OR the screen panel in the door at any given time. You must physically change the glass and the screen and store the panel that is not in use. If you want to maximize daylight and visibility to the outside, this is the way to go. As long as you don’t mind installing the screen in the spring and the glass in the fall, you will be happy with this door. It does not have a line across the middle of the door obstructing visibility. Ventilating: If you do not want to go through the hassle of changing glass and screen, the ventilating style keeps both glass and screen in the door at the same time. With this style, there are 2 panels of glass, and depending on the manufacturer, one or both move up and down revealing the screen portion and allowing for ventilation. Rollscreen: The Rollscreen models are the newest hybrids and take the best of both worlds from the Fullview and the Ventilating style. In this style, the screen is still self storing like the ventilating model, but you get the visibility of a fullview door because the screen is rolled up on a tensioned dowel at the top of the door. As you pull the top window down, the screen is attached and then revealed. This is a great choice of you have kids or pets that have a keen ability to destroy screens, because the screen is only on the top part of the door . . . far out of their reach.
Once you have decided which style, then it is time to decide which manufacturer.
There are 4 main storm door manufacturers: Pella, Larson, Emco, and Anderson. Lowe’s Home Improvement sells Pella and Larson brands while Home Depot sells Emco and Anderson products. From an installer’s perspective, I would rank these manufacturers in order of preference based on product selection, price, durability, warranty, ease of installation, customer service, and fewest number of problems in the long run as:

Carefully considering these 5 areas of storm doors will ensure that you pick the right storm door for your home. It will help take out some of the stress involved in selection, and make sure that your expectations of the performance of your new door are realistic.

Thinking about buying a home? Many of the cost cutting tricks used in construction are not visible to the naked eye. Unfortunately, cheap construction can cost a great deal more in the future, when low quality materials start to wear out and fail. Luckily, there are a few things a potential home buyer can see that may be a signal that the rest of the house is poorly constructed.
Check The Flooring
One of the first and most obvious signs of problems with a new or older home is issues with the flooring. Look carefully for an uneven flooring surface in areas like the kitchen and the entrance between rooms. An uneven flooring surface is both annoying to live with and an indicator of possible problems with the way the foundation and underground areas were built. Check wood floors and carpeting for gaps near walls and entrances that may indicate a sloppy or cheap installation as well.
Windows And Doors
Many things can be inferred about a home’s construction by the choice of windows and construction of window and door frames. Be certain that all external and internal doors open, close, and latch without any sign of hitting the frame. Look at the paint around the door frames in an older home for signs that the door might be hitting the frame in other seasons when the wood expands or contracts due to seasonal climate variations and humidity. Make sure windows close with a solid seal, and check for double paned glass in newer homes and cold climates. While there is much more to a home than the windows and doors, a builder who skimped in these important areas is likely to have cut other corners as well.
Water Damage
Look carefully throughout a home for any signs of water damage or mold. Stains on the walls or ceiling should always be closely inspected for these issues, even if you are planning to repaint the home later. Make sure the areas in the bathroom where water will go, like the walls around a tub or shower, are well tiled or otherwise waterproofed. Examine the area around the bottom of the toilet for signs of water damage or leaking, and make sure the bathroom floor is not rotting or coming loose near the tub, toilet, or sink. If the home has a basement, check the basement area for signs of water staining on the wall, floors, and near the sump pump.
Research The Builder
One of the simplest and most important things a potential home buyer can do to avoid low quality construction is simply researching the home’s builder before making a purchase. If a home is new, it is simple to check with the better business bureau and online for a solid reputation. For older homes, it may be necessary to find out if other similar homes in the area that have probably been built by the same company have any common problems. Ask local contractors if there are any known issues with homes in an area before buying and be sure to get a home inspection from a qualified professional.

As we mentally remove our winter coats and boots, we start thinking about spring and what we are going to plant in our gardens, how much, in which corner and what color. However, plants are expensive and, with the economy, our wallets may be tighter than usual and it may feel frivolous to pay full price for plants at our local home improvement store. Don’t be discouraged….The pursuit and chasing after plants is like a treasure hunt to see how low we can pay for healthy and gorgeous plants.
Many universities have their own horticulture shows at which plants are offered at great discounts. In addition, botanical gardens offer a wide variety of unusual plants that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost. Botanical gardens in major cities are staffed by experts who know how and what to plant and the results are very unusual and hardy plants.
Every town has City, Parks and Recreation grounds workers who remove dead plants, recycle plants around city beds, or even plant numerous plants on highways, containers that populate downtown buildings or median islands that border city streets. Many of the city workers discard dead plants but if you observe carefully, it’s only the outside of the plant that is dead; the roots are well preserved and healthy. In Washington, D.C., I remember that if we spied on when city workers would come and change the plants in different seasons, we could take home hundreds of bulbs from discarded tulip plants that adorned city planters.
Water Resources also offer gardening workshops and offer reduced priced plants. A quick phone call to your local water resources will let you know when they offer seminars during which they demonstrate native plants or bulbs that are appropriate for your local weather. Often these same departments will offer seminars on rain barrels and water management. They usually have a good supply of plants that are on sale.
In some localities, prisons also offer plant fairs at extremely reduced prices. In prison, prisoners as part of the workforce, sometimes re-educate dogs, work with leather goods, sew flags, and some garden. The plants that they grow can be purchased for extremely cheap prices.
Garden clubs abound with enthusiasts who grow any type of plants: orchids, ferns, rose bushes, bromeliads, native plants, etc.. If you watch in your newspaper when they are going to have their annual sale, the plants that are sold are grown by experts and are extremely healthy as well as cheap. Many clubs have plant exchanges where you can bring a cutting from one of your plants and go exchange it for another. It enhances the variety of your garden at a really affordable price.
Loews Garden Center has a recycling section in the back of their garden department which sells perfectly good plants at up to 75% of the price. Those plants may look droopy, have lost some of their leaves, or may not appear as fresh as the others, but there is nothing wrong with them. If you plant them in good soil and cut the leaves and stems at the ground level, those perky little plants will reward you with numerous growths.
Perhaps the city where you live puts on a “Green Fest.” In St. Petersburg, Florida, the Green Thumb Festival attracts more than 20,000 people with vendors of every kind of plant and garden enthusiasts come with carts to carry their loot. The city puts on seminars dealing with friendly to not so friendly critters that visit your yard, how to grow herbs, how to preserve bulbs, how to make mulch, etc. They even distribute free mulch. The thrill of attending one of these is finding the wide variety of plants and flowers that are not usually sold in stores. A feast for all plant lovers.
So don’t despair that perhaps this year you don’t have the budget to purchase as many plants as you want. When you compare the prices at your local home improvement store and see how much a plant cost, then a little research will go a long way towards populating your garden with beautiful plants that you acquired, through your genius treasure hunt, at a fraction of the cost.
So, this coming spring, envision your game plan. Don’t let the economy dictate how much you can afford to plant in your garden. If you follow your scavenger hunt, you can be even more prolific because you’ll have gotten three to four times the amounts of plants than in prior years. Once in the ground, there won’t be any difference with which plant came from where, except your purse strings will be fuller to purchase more accessories for your garden. Happy Hunting!!!

In addition to hiring an architect for the production of construction documents (drawings and specifications) for a home improvement project or a new house, the architect can be a real resource in protecting the owner from the very difficult process which is a construction project. Besides being well-versed in the construction process, an experienced architect knows intimately the pitfalls of construction and has a working knowledge of construction law and, in my case, Florida lien law.
An architect can make real suggestions for protecting the homeowner for an unscrupulous or inexperienced contractor.
Protecting the homeowner from an inexperienced or unscrupulous contractor
When an architect is hired to provide services during construction, he/she will generally:
review shop drawings for all materials on the project answer Requests for Information (RFI’s) review Material and Labor Cost Schedule and Contractor Requisitions make periodic visits to the job to review the progress of the work
Shop drawings provided by the contractor or subcontractor, through the general contractor, show the manufacturer’s information on the actual material and sometimes his recommendations on how the material should be installed. When a contractor asks permission to substitute one product for another, the architect would make sure that the products are equivalent items.
The architect who is hired for services during the construction phase will review the pay requests and make sure that what the client is getting is what is in the permitted drawings. When he/she goes to the site, the architect can make sure that what was submitted in the shop drawings is really what is being installed in the field. In addition, the architect can make sure that the contractor is not “front-loading” the schedule of material and labor costs. Front-loading means that the contractor is trying to secretly collect more money up front by stating that items which are to be installed first actually cost more than they do. In other words, he will put in more money for the steel for the footings and the concrete than what they actually cost so that he can put more money in his pocket at the beginning of the job.
By providing these four services during the construction phase, the architect will help the homeowner avoid a dispute with the general contractor or his subs. It is easier to AVOID a dispute with contractor than to try to fix a dispute once it starts.
Here are a few suggestions to avoid when dealing with a general contractor:
Hiring a contractor without checking him out thoroughly. References are necessary. Visiting several projects he has built is a good idea. Making the contractor angry at the very beginning of the project. Bills have to be paid on time. Cooperation with the contractor will establish the “tone” for the project and the project will run smoother. When I am hired to do jobsite meetings, I like to start the meeting with what went right that week on the job. This is an amazing tool to get the contractor’s cooperation. All people like to be recognized for what they do right and not what they do wrong. Contractors with limited construction knowledge and experience. The contractor may not understand the plans and this could lead to mistakes in the project. Contractor demands and collects substantial amounts of money from the client prior to doing any work. I advise my clients never to give more than 10% of any contract for mobilization (to start the project). Changing any details, but especially structural details, without the prior consent of the architect/engineer. This could lead to a problem that is not visible in the present but could cause a problem in the future. Paying the contractor too much money with each pay request, leaving the client vulnerable to the contractor not finishing the job. The amount of work that is left could end up being more than the money that the contractor would collect, if he finished the job. Signing a contract with the contractor which the contractor drafted, that is not to any known standard, such as the ones published by the American Institute of Architects. Paying the contractor month after month without verifying that the required county/city inspections are getting done. The client pays all the money required by the contractor at each pay requisition, but fails to obtain Partial Releases of Liens from his subs, leaving the client vulnerable to having to pay each sub again, if the contractor runs off with the money. Hiring a contractor for a job that the contractor considers a “small” job for him or where the company is a large company with substantial resources to spend years in court fighting a lawsuit. Look for a company that is neither too large nor too small to complete the project and who will want to finish the project correctly. Not getting a final city/county inspection and not getting a final certificate of occupancy/ completion.
These are a few suggestions that need to be implemented on any construction project, but hiring an architect to provide services during construction could actually save the homeowner money in the long run. An experienced architect can bring years of knowledge on the construction process and prevent a homeowner from making costly mistakes due to his inexperience.

Whether you’re looking for ways to improve the way your home looks or to make it more energy efficient, it’s always best to find out how to do it right and get the most out of your time and money. These home improvement tips can show you how to start saving energy right away.
1. Use energy saving lamps instead of incandescent bulbs. Energy Star qualified light bulbs such as CFLs use 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.
2. Check your heating and cooling system, including the furnace, air conditioner, and heat pump). Be sure to seal your ducts. 8. Here’s another home improvement tip that doesn’t cost much. Use curtains, blinds and drapes to help you save energy and money. In winter, open the blinds, drapes and curtains in the morning to let the sunlight in. Close them at night to help keep the warm air in.
9. Landscaping can improve your home’s looks while saving energy. Shrubs and trees in strategic locations can protect your home from frigid winter winds and block out the hot summer sun.
10. You won’t have to invest a lot of money for this home improvement tip but you’ll get a lot of savings in return. Purchase a hot water insulation kit from your local home improvement center and wrap it around your water heater. You’ll save on water heating costs.
11. Consider installing your own renewable energy system. A solar or wind energy system can help you reduce your utility bills.

Home improvement is not something anyone should avoid doing. Self expression in ones home is just as important as the improvement. Knowhow and ability should not be reasons these two points are not achieved. Painting and decorating can be done by painting contractors, and this leaves the home owner with the satisfaction of a beautiful home without the worry of how to do the job.
Painting and decorating is often done by individuals. These are people who feel secure in taking that chance. Quite often these individuals are ammeters when it comes to this industry. This can sometimes lead to the amateur eventually using painting contractors. Once this task is taken on, he or she realizes that it is not an easy as it looks. Hiring a professional is the only way to complete the work correctly.
Hiring painting contractors can be a pretty hard task in itself. One should be careful not to fall for scams or con artists. References should be verified on anyone allowed into ones home, and this holds true for someone painting and decorating as well. There are many companies out there who want to do the best work possible and provide homes with beautiful painting jobs. Unfortunately, not all contract companies or individual contractor hold themselves to this same standard. There are a lot of people who would rather make a quick dollar, but also do a quick job. This quick job is often time horrible. Stains may be left on floors, streaks in the paint are on the walls, and the colours may be incorrect. It is best to work with a trusted company or individual.
Some people choose to do the painting and decoration themselves instead of using painting contractors because of cost savings. This savings is present in some cases, but in other cases the contractors are just as affordable. Most contractors will visit ones home and give a quote on the painting job. There can be a quote if the owner supplies the paint or if the contractor does. Typically, it is cheaper if the painter gets the paint because he or she may have a discount with a local store. The quotes are often a better deal if there are more rooms to paint. The price may also be affected by the level of difficulty. One should take the contractors quote and compare it to the cost of the paint and other supplies that will need to be purchased. Many times there is little if any difference at all in the price.
Painting ones home can be a fun but scary task. The fun part is picking out the colours and finding just the right trim to accent them. The scary part is the actual act of painting the room or rooms. Painting contractors are available to help with the painting and decorating of the home. As long as references are checked this business is a fairly safe bet. What is an LCD TV?
Liquid crystal displays or LCD’s are the new craze in television technology. They are light in weight and slime as your child’s school note book. You can hang them like a picture frame or even place them on a stand. They produce crystal clear images and make even the most boring documentaries interesting to watch. Are you ready to get one? Before you go out and buy one. You should do your research this is not your parents CRT TV which works off of a light bulb there is lots of sophisticated technology involved in LCD TVs. So what do you need to know before you get one?
How does a LCD TV work?
Liquid crystal displays have been around for a long time your VCR clock, microwave display, the clock in your room and so on. The LCD has a great advantage it has low power consumption and can be made into almost any shape, hens the picture frame LCD TV. The LCD television display consists of two polarizing transparent panels and a liquid crystal solution sandwiched in between. The front layer of glass on the screen is etched on the inside surface in a pattern to form a template for the layer of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals are shaped like rods they bend light when electricity is applied to them this way light can not pass through them. Each crystal acts like a on off switch, either allowing light to pass through or blocking it, the pattern of transparent and dark formed from switching crystals forms the image you see.
What do I need to know before I buy a LCD TV?
Unlike the older tube TV’s there are significant things which need to be taken into consideration when purchasing a LCD TV. LCD’s involve computer technology and computer technology involves micro processors, software and etc.. These are things which can make your buying experience a head ace. I have gone through and simplified the buying experience; below is a list of things, you should know before making your purchase as well as suggestions. What is listed below is very important to know because if it looks good in the store might not look good in your living room.
First thing is first how much viewing room do you have in your house for the TV you want?
Recommended
20″ – 27″ TVs you need to be 2.5ft to 5ft from the screen.
32″ – 37″ TVs you need to be 6ft to 8ft from the screen.
42″ – 46″ TVs you need to be 10ft to 14ft from the screen.
50″ – 60″ TVs you need to be 12ft to 16ft from the screen.
Response/refresh time
This is the time that it takes each frame of image to refresh onto the screen. This is very important because if it is slow you will see a poor quality image depending on what you are watching. Make sure you get something in the 5ms or less range. Even though your movies and sports games might look great, your kid’s video games might not. I would recommend getting the fastest response time you can find for a decent price.
Connections
Do not get duped by “computer ready” slogans, if you want a clear image from the computer you will be connecting to the TV make sure the connection is DVI, lots of TVs come with a computer connections (VGA) but not a DVI type connection.
Other basic connections: HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) similar to DVI, RF in, Component (Y/Pb/Pr), S-Video input, A/V input, USB 2.0, Premium Audio, Headphone jack.
Image clarity
Units Wide : Units High
Normally 16:9 is for HDTV, most shows are broadcasted in 4:3 ratio. Make sure you get 16:9 or you will be disappointed.
1080p, 1080i or 720p?
Let me just give you the answer HD movies are out and Blue ray are in, Blue ray operates at 1080p end of conversation. If you still insist on more depth read the next paragraph.
1080p means that the resolution of the picture is 1,920 vertical pixels by 1,080 horizontal pixels and the “p” stands for progressive scanning. Progressive scanning offers a smoother picture as horizontal lines are scanned or vertically scanned. This is Blu Ray and true HD quality.
1080i means that the resolution of the picture is 1920 vertical pixels by 1080 horizontal pixels interlaced. Interlaced refers to the scanning method where every odd line is scanned one followed by a second scan of even lines. This is not smooth as 1080p.
720p is the same concept as 1080p except the resolution is 1,280 vertical pixels by 720 horizontal pixels progressive. This is normal cable TV resolution.
Recommended LCD TVs
Don’t get cheap the better brands names will give you better hardware. For example how many sheets of LCD material are used to make the TV differs by brands and price.
