Every day you enter your living room and are nearly overwhelmed by the mess. Cords coil together like beds of snakes, stacks of DVDs and video games clutter every inch of table space and even some of the floor. You may think you need several pieces of furniture to contain all of these things, but with a little ingenuity a TV console is all you will really need. Start by assessing how much room you need to stow all of your technology. Maybe two shelves are enough? Or perhaps you need a few cabinets as well. Once you’ve chosen your new contractor, be sure to insist that you get all the details of your project (including price and delivery estimates/completion dates), in writing before paying any deposits. A written contract is essential to ensuring that the work is done properly and on time.
Unfortunately, not every contractor is reputable, and homeowners need to be on the look-out for potential rip-offs. Here are a few things to watch for when hiring a contractor:
Door-to-door solicitation. Offers to use leftover materials from another job. A contractor who only accepts cash payments. Someone who insists on receiving payment in full before commencing work. Pressure to make an on-the-spot decision. Offers to help you secure financing with their own “lender”.
Hiring a reputable contractor seems like it should be easy, but oftentimes it isn’t. Homeowners should be aware of the dangers of hiring the wrong person to work on their home and take all necessary steps to ensure that the work is completed to their specifications, timetable and budget.

1. What experience does your contractor have with this type of project?
How much experience does the home improvement contractor have in doing projects like yours? Does s/he specialize in this type of project, or will s/he be using your home as a learning project? Typically, contractors who have done several projects like yours will have a better idea of the actual costs and production issues involved in your project. Remember, however, that every remodeling project is a little different, and it is doubtful that any contractor has ever done a job EXACTLY like yours.
2. Who will be doing the actual work?
Will the individual you’re talking to be doing the work himself, or will they be using subcontractors or employees? Each scenario has its own advantages and disadvantages, but make sure you know what to expect on your job. Who will you ask questions once the project begins? Should you talk to the subcontractors, a jobsite manager, or the owner of the business? It is very important you have one person who will consistently answer your questions and not give you the run around.
3. What happens if changes are required to the initial bid?
What is the contractors’ process for making changes in the middle of the project? Most times you would like to avoid making changes mid-project but there can be unforeseen obstacles that arrive and it is good to know ahead of time how your contractor will deal with those obstacles. Most contractors use some sort of change order form that details the exact work and cost involved in changes once work has begun.
4. Am I prepared to be flexible when the unexpected arises?
Invariably, every job has something that wasn’t planned on come up. Delays due to weather, unforeseen conditions which present themselves once walls are torn down, changes to design or material choices, and problems with employees or subcontractors can all upset the planned flow of the project. Are you prepared to be flexible and work with your contractor to find solutions when these problems arise?
5. How do I feel about working with this contractor?
What is your gut feeling on working with this individual? Do you trust him or her? How do you feel about their design ideas as compared to your own? Can you communicate openly and clearly with this person? If it’s a remodeling project, how do you feel about this person being in your house for several days or weeks at a time often when you are not home? This is a really important factor to consider if you don’t trust this person don’t hire them.

With spring approaching it’s time to fix things up around the house. The winter months may have left behind several problem areas. If you check your gutters I’m sure they need to be cleared of debris. If you noticed any drafts through your doors or windows you may need caulking or weather striping to create an air tight seal.
If you have a wooden deck or concrete patio you may consider pressure washing and sealing them. Start planning your patio or deck decor by shopping for outdoor furniture and plants. Check out your grill and prep it by cleaning the grates and filling the propane bottle for your first cookout. This can be a real exciting time of year for the entire family.
For most areas of the country the time is near for fertilizing your lawn and putting out grass seed where needed. The reward of a nice plush green lawn is just around the corner. Brighten up your exterior with flowering shrubs and nice pots of perennials. This will create a very appealing look surrounding your home.
Spring cleaning time is a lot of work, buy it’s also very refreshing, so hang in there. The windows will need to be washed inside and out. Check all of your screens to insure that you can allow the fresh spring air to blow through your home and not those pesky bugs.

Having a contractor for a foundation repair job may give perfection to the job, but it is also expensive. However, people lacking the time or skill to do the job themselves could opt for one from several of the foundation repair contractors available. Giving a foundation repair contract to an external agency means having to cope with the inconvenience of workmen in your house for a couple of days and someone being at home during the entire period of the repair job for supervision and security.
Contractors for repair work are the same people who also undertake other home improvement contracts. You may find several of them online as also in your own neighborhood street. Home improvement contractors work as smalltime businesses. They generally have a few skilled and unskilled laborers and limited resources. They also have built-up contacts with certain suppliers, who sell them materials at concession rates.
Once you approach a contractor, the first thing they would do is to visit your house, examine the extent of the deterioration and pull up an estimate based on the same. Usually contractors do not charge anything for estimates. It is always prudent not to rely on a single estimate. At least three estimates must be taken. Do not settle for the lowest estimate – rather see who provides better materials and better overall quality of the job. It is unwise to save a few dollars just to have the whole repair work redone in a couple of years.
Before money is exchanged, ask the contractor for references and any previous history of work done. These references must all be cross-checked, paying a visit to their homes and inspecting their quality of work if possible. One more important thing to be checked before paying the contractor the first down-payment is whether they have all the requisite licenses. Three insurances must be checked for: (i) the Workman’s Compensation Insurance, which protects you if a worker is injured in your premises; (ii) the Automobile Insurance, which would assist you were your contractor to damage any other vehicle on your premises and (iii) the General Liability Insurance, which would compensate you if your contractor or laborers would damage any of your property.
It is not necessary and, of course, not wise to pay the entire amount to the contractor in advance. Almost all contractors begin work with a little amount of the total upfront and claim the rest of the amount upon the completion of the job. There are many unforeseeable situations that may occur like natural calamities, strikes of vehicles or even death of the contractor for which a homeowner has to be prepared for.
Finally, it always pays never to rely totally on the judgment of the contractor. There are several do-it-yourself books and guides which one must read before embarking on a job. Knowing what the repair job is all about will go a long way in protecting you from being cheated.
