There are many different wood fences types to choose from. Wood fencing in the west coast is primarily western red cedar, it’s natural beauty shines in the privacy fences that adorn many residences. Most often wood fences are built with 6 foot tall fence boards that are approximately 1 inch think and 4 inches wide. Most large fence builders will use posts that measure 4 1/8 inch by 4 1/8′s inch. These posts are much bigger than posts you will find at Lowe’s or Home Depot which commonly measure only 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches.

Experienced fence builders know that you need to set your posts in concrete between 18 and 24 inches into the ground. For the sturdiest posts you should let them cure at least 24 hours before you come back and build the fence. Setting your posts is the most important step in building your fence, if you get off line the whole fence will be crooked, so make sure to take extra care on this step!

If you’re looking for a fence that is more intricate than a basic estate style fence, try looking into a modified panel fence. A modified panel fence has a 2?4 that runs on top of the fence boards to give the fence a much cleaner, more sophisticated look. In addition, there is a 1?4 and a 2?4 that run just under the top 2?4. When you finish the fence off with custom post caps, it’s easy to see why this fence is extremely popular.

If you want to go for the grand-daddy of them all wood fence, look into a full panel construction. This type of fence is similar to a modified panel, except that there is a 2?4 that runs parallel to the ground. If you ask your local fence builder about any of these types of fences, they should be able to build these for you. There are lots of extras you can add to these fences, such as: spacing between the fence boards, custom post caps, lattice, trellis, gate arbors and much more!

How can I apply for the job?

Head into any Lowe’s and what you’re going to find is that there are kiosks set up, where you can apply. These are generally located around the customer service desk. If you can’t find them, you can always ask someone, and they will point you in the right direction.

If you don’t want to head into the store, you can always apply online. This is the best way to go, because you’re going to find that you can look for open positions, and you can apply for the job that best suits your needs. Since a store like Lowe’s is fairly large, you’re going to find that there will be a lot of positions available.

What kind of jobs are there?

If you have a specialty for the past, you’re going to have a great chance of getting hired. For example, if you where a plumber, you can probably land a job rather quickly. Lowe’s love people like this and the pay can be awfully nice if you have some sort of experience. Over the years thanks to competition it seems that the Big Box Hardware Stores like Home Depot and Lowes have gotten progressively better with their customers service. Why has this taken place? Well two reasons; one is competition and the other is because the customers have demanded it and by delivering better customer service the customers come back to shop more often and have a better shopping experience.

They spend more time in the stores and therefore buy more and return to purchase more on subsequent following visits as well. And guess what both companies have reaped the rewards in customer loyalty and increased sales. Unfortunately this change of pace has also impacted the small hardware stores, which always gave great service you see.

Had the Big Box Hardware Stores not gotten with the program they would not have succeeded as well as they have over their smaller competitors. It seems that in the past all we had heard about Home Depot and Lowe’s was that you could never find what you needed and there was never any one available to help you.

We all remember hearing these stories and perhaps had uttered these words ourselves and yet today you can always find someone to help you and generally they’re helping someone else around the corner from where you are standing. Not only will they take you to the exact item you’re looking for, but most of them are able to answer your questions or find someone who can. Please consider all this in 2006.

Do you enjoy strolling through the local garden center to see what is new like I do? All the major chains like Lowe’s Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Target all have the garden departments with a wide variety of plants, pots, rocks, soils, fertilizers and garden tools.

As wide of a variety that these chains possess they never seem to carry exactly what I’m looking for. For example, why empty out the wallet on a plant at a specialty garden store when one of the big boxes sells something ‘close’ at about half the price?

I’ve been working on a plant watering project lately and wanted to find some LECA rocks (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) to replant some houseplants in. This project will be removing houseplants from soil and completely replacing the media with rock all in an effort to simplify house plant care. Basically creating a simple self-watering container for the plant to grow in.

There is a Super Wal-Mart and Home Depot within 5 minutes of where I live and a Lowe’s 20 minutes away. The Wal-Mart and Home Depot are huge stores. After spending some time in each of the garden departments they do carry a good array of basics. In general the chains carry the top items and best sellers.

However, if you happen to fall into my shopping zone, a specialty store probably fits me better. A store, which carries a variety of, not only tools, pots, fertilizer and media. But a store, which also handles named varieties of plants.

Today so many named varieties are available that it is important to get yourself familiar with them. The Internet provides a wealth of information. For example, many people may be familiar with the common Chinese evergreen – Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’. The ‘Silver Queen’ has been grown for decades for use in offices and house plant use. However, over the past few years many new hybrids have been introduced with broad leaves and color patterns. Plus they handle cooler temperatures than ‘Silver Queen’ can.

These new hybrids carry names like ‘Amelia’, ‘Silver Bay’, ‘Emerald Star’, ‘Jewel of India’ and ‘Silverado.’ These plants are superior in ease of care, cold tolerance and durability. New improved varieties come in almost every category. From Anthuriums to Spathiphyllum and even the popular Ficus now finds new varieties.

If you are looking to fertilize your lawn or replace your weed eater these big box stores may be fine. As far as a supply of lawn maintenance equipment, garden hoses, tools and other supplies like fertilizers and bags of special soil, the big stores have it covered. You can find some good plants for use indoors at these stores.

Follow these few tips for best results.

Look for an area in the garden center devoted to houseplants
Always buy fresh – Find out what day new plants arrive each week
Make sure the roots look good before you buy any plant
Research the web for new varieties and ask the manager to order them – they can!

Having plants indoors dress up any room. Buying healthy plants will make your plant care much easier. You can find them at the chains but you will need to do some work to find the best value. Value is not always price.
